What is Christian Counseling?
Christian counseling is the process of using the truths of the Bible, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the power of prayer, the tools of the mental health profession and the wisdom of life experience to help those in need.
A Christian Counselor may be a lay counselor, pastoral counselor or clinical counselor. A clinical counselor is one who has a graduate degree at the masters or doctoral level and is credentialed by a governing body upon completion of rigorous requirements and examinations. At Life Springs, this includes psychologists, professional counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists.
The truths of the Bible include all the teachings of Scripture found in the Old and New Testaments. Christian counselors rely heavily on passages of scripture that speak to our relationship with God and with one another. The Bible provides us with understandable truths regarding human nature, sin, redemption, and grace. The Christian counselor is guided by this truth found in scripture as they attempt to assist those in need.
The tools of the mental health profession include a wide range of techniques and assessment tools such as individual psychotherapy, marital, family, and group therapy, psychological testing, etc. As research develops regarding techniques and tools that are considered helpful to people in the counseling process, all such techniques and tools will be considered useful in our practice only in light of how they line up with Biblical principal.
The wisdom of life experience is the learning that each counselor and client bring to the counseling situation. The learning that has resulted from these experiences is invaluable in the process of growth and change.
Those in need are the clients who find their way to a counselor’s office. They are adults, children, couples, and families. They may be self-referred, or may come at the suggestion of a pastor, physician, loved one, former client, teacher, or friend. The needs they bring are as diverse as life itself.
Life Springs offers Christ-centered, professionally trained pastoral and clinical counseling. We also provide consultation services which include:
- Educational consultation to assist parents and schools
- Ministry consultation to assist churches/ministries in establishing supportive ministries within their congregations
- Trainings and professional development on a wide variety of topics (parenting, marriage, dealing with disabilities, etc.)
At Life Springs we believe that….
God made mankind in His image, desires intimate relationship with us, and desires for us to have godly relationships with one another. However, mankind has rejected God’s desires introducing sin, its corruption and curse into our world. As a result, people find themselves struggling in a variety of ways with the corrupting effects of sin through relationship difficulties, addictions, sexual identity issues, depression, fears and many other spiritual, psychological, and social problems. But God has not left us without hope. He offers us the solution to all of life’s problems through Jesus Christ. Through Jesus’ sacrifice we are offered forgiveness of our own sins, the opportunity to move toward freedom from the effects of sin to experience abundant life through the ministry of the Holy Spirit (the true Counselor). Ultimately, He promises to remake us and our world without sin or its effects for those who have joined his family. Our purpose at Life Springs is to bring glory to God by making ourselves available to Him to assist you in the freeing process!
The mission of Life Springs is to honor God in the following ways….
* by offering high quality, Christ-centered counseling, educational and rehabilitative services to those in need,
* by helping others offer similar assistance through consultation and training, and
* by providing a supportive and Christ-centered environment for its employees, affiliates and clientele.
